On October 9, 2024, the birthday he had long turned into a release date, Willie James Ray III stepped back from the name Lil Will and reintroduced himself as Willie Noir Obscura. The new moniker arrived alongside Mastery, his eighth studio album, and a production commitment he had not tried at this scale before: an AI-generated music video for each of the album’s 13 tracks, all directed and edited in-house through Dream Team Empire Films.
The rebrand marked a shift in name, not in method. Ray had been building his catalog under that name for eight years by that point. According to the company, it now spans nine studio albums, two EPs, 20 mixtapes, and more than 400 individual songs, all released independently and distributed across major streaming platforms.
A Catalog Built from Cahokia
Ray was born on October 9, 1991, in Centreville, Illinois, and grew up in nearby Cahokia, a small city east of St. Louis. His official biography places his first professional release in 2016, with the debut EP The World Is Mines arriving on his birthday that year, featuring the singles “Heaven or Hell” and “Day 1s” with Kevo. The debut album, Free World, followed later in 2016, carrying the single “Choices” with Echo and production from DJ Radiohead Beats and Hurricane Beatz.
What came next was less a breakthrough moment than a sustained accumulation. Eskimo Lifestyle opened on January 1, 2019, with contributions from Timo, Kevo, G-Money, Luh Charlez, and Hurricane Beatz alongside Ray’s own production. I Am followed that October 9, largely a solo project save for a feature from Og Papi. Born to Hustle arrived June 18, 2020. On July 4, 2021, Recreated extended the count by 18 tracks, with Echo and Timo returning and Speed on the Track handling production throughout.
By March 2023, with the release of Prod by Lil Will, Ray had taken his production role fully inward. He handled every instrumental on the record, all 20, working across Pro Tools, FL Studio, and Logic Pro X. The album also established a recurring family dimension: both his daughter, Rayinna Ray, and his son, Willie James Ray IV, appear as featured artists. Ray has attributed over four billion streams to that album specifically, in a statement published on Apple Music.
Rothschild Dreams arrived October 9, 2023, drawing what the company describes as millions of streams and rounding out a year in which Ray had released two albums. Seven studio projects across seven years, each handled independently.
The Mastery Campaign
For Mastery, released October 9, 2024, Ray built the video rollout directly into the album itself. He produced a music video for each of its 13 tracks using AI generation tools, directing and editing through Dream Team Empire Films. A full library of those videos, alongside newer releases, is available on the official site. The lead single, “Everybody Hustle,” featured Willie James Ray IV, continuing the family collaboration that had become a consistent thread in his catalog.
The scope of the Mastery campaign reflects how Ray has organized his creative practice from the beginning. He records, mixes, and masters his own material, produces the underlying compositions, handles vocal production, and directs his own video work. His toolkit includes Pro Tools, FL Studio, Logic Pro X, Premiere Pro, Final Cut, and AI generation software. Dream Team Empire, the label he founded and leads as CEO, handles the business infrastructure: music distribution, publishing, sync licensing, marketing, and brand development.
What Dream Team Empire Has Built
Beyond the music, the company operates a merchandise line, a direct-support membership program, and beat licensing and audio engineering services. The roster of collaborators across Ray’s nine albums reads as its own regional network: Kevo, Echo, Timo, 2Cupz, Og Papi, DJ Radiohead Beats, Hurricane Beatz, G-Money, Luh Charlez, Speed on the Track, and DayToDay on the Track, among others.
Forever, Ray’s ninth album, arrived in 2026 with 14 tracks. A new set of Dream Team Empire Films productions followed, among them “Elevation,” “The Biggest,” “Famous,” and “Took Her to the Joe.” The project reached listeners through the same model that has run since 2016: independently made, independently released, on the schedule of one person who handles most of the work himself.
The name Willie Noir Obscura arrived in 2024. The catalog and the operation behind it had been building for years before anyone asked.
